Butterfield assemblage
Deborah Butterfield made this type of art famous with her horse sculpture. The Butterfield Assemblage consists of putting nature-found materials together to make a form. For this particular project, we had to use sticks, twigs, grass & etc. to form any kind of shoe we want. Putting pieces, such as sticks, together isn't that easy because you have to accurately measure each so it won't look messy and disorganized. My sculpture class went outside to gather nature-found materials for us to use in class. I got mostly sticks, gumballs and pine leaves. First, I drew a sketch of the type of shoe I was going to make. Then, I started with the base of the sandals, so it was like an oval-shape with curves for the toe. I then put a bunch of "gumballs" for my middle part of the sandals. It serves as my focal point. I then stacked thin, short stacks of sticks as the back of my sandals. The pine leaves/grasses serves as the soft cushion of the sandals. Lastly, I attached really skinny straw grass as the straps of my sandals.
