Plaster carving
With plaster carving, you need patience and you need to be able to visualize your design in 3D while your're on the process of carving the plaster. This is an abstract plaster carving that is Henry Moore-inspired. His sculptures are mainly abstract human figures. You can't just carve plaster but you also have to think about each angle of the sculpture if it is interesting. First, I started off with a sketch of an abstract mother & child. Then, the plaster was made by starting off with the powder then mixing it in a carton until you get the consistency that is needed. Once, it's ready you just tear off the carton and "boom" there goes a formed plaster ready for carving. I used different tools that scrapes, carves and cuts through the plaster. Mr. Varney taught us that the easiest way to take off a big chunk out of the plaster is by using a flat edge facing down with a bevel. As I was carving, I realized that it's not easy to make a round form from the plaster but with assistance it turned out good. My design consists of a mother holding its baby on her its lap. The mother has two faces, one is looking down on its baby and the other one is looking sideways. This sculpture is abstract and human-figured which is Henry Moore-inspired!
