Memorial Orb
This ceramics project is about making an orb that honors something or someone that is dead or no longer here. I chose an idea or event for my memorial orb and that is the Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda that struck the Philippines late last year. In this horrible disaster, a lot of people died, or was misplaced and the surroundings were destroyed. I wanted to commemorate the lives of Filipinos who died and also the country Philippines for being strong and united. First, I cut a slab of clay and balled it up. Take two of those balled of clay and pinch each to make the center hollow. Then, I put the two semi-circle pinched clay together to form a round, hollow ball. I chose to have legs so it can stand up and I made it like short bamboo sticks. Then, put designs on the orb and also carved pictures on the clay. To add clay designs on the orb, I scored and put the "clay paste" on the design piece as well as on the orb. Also, for the carving design on the orb, I used different clay carving tools and etched drawings such as typhoon, waves and the islands of Philippines. Finally, I glazed it with different colors and texture effects and was put in the kiln to be fired.
